Spanish exile in the Dominican Republic and its impact

The Dominican Republic Embassy in Spain and the General Archives of the Dominican Republic (AGN) are presenting starting Friday, 24 July 2020, the virtual exhibition “Spanish Exile in the Dominican Republic: Reconstruction of a People in Uprooted Conditions (1939-1940)”.

The online exhibition features photographs and historical documents on the lives and legacy of Spanish refugees that migrated to the Dominican Republic after the civil war.

Dominican Ambassador to Spain, Olivo Rodríguez Huertas, said the exhibition unfolds the tragedy of the Spaniards who came escaping the fratricidal war in Spain. He said it also focuses on the tragedy of the Dominican people under the bloody dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. He says the Spanish emigrants who came stimulated cultural transformation and planted the seeds for the liberation movement and aspirations for a democracy that would guarantee fundamental rights and respect for human dignity in the Dominican Republic.
