Hato Mayor needs your help

In the eastern province of Hato Mayor, hundreds of houses were damaged and thousands left without a place to sleep. Over five thousand persons were evacuated in the town, to the north of La Romana and San Pedro de Macoris and west of El Seibo.

“Terrifying” was the word most used by residents in Hato Mayor when describing the storm’s passing. Winds were up to 95 km/h and rains of over 10 inches were registered. Both nearby rivers, the Magua and the Paña-Paña, overflowed their banks, causing historic flooding in this small city, founded in the early 16th century.

One elderly resident told reporters that many hurricanes had passed by Hato Mayor, and she named David, Georges and Maria, but she said, “none were as terrifying and damaging as this one.” Isaias caused all the damage it did despite not reaching hurricane category while passing.

President-elect Luis Abinader was in Hato Mayor, where he promised the development of a housing project to assist those who have lost their homes. His team has quantified 300 houses were seriously damaged.

Every local association and agricultural group has joined to call for assistance. Currently, there are brigades from the Public Works Ministry at work repairing a bridge over the Guayaquia river.

The Hato Mayor Ecotourism and Agribusiness Cluster, its Chamber of Commerce, the Cattleman’s Association and the local radio station, Azucar 89.1FM are asking for help. Currently, there are brigades from the Ministry of Public Works Ministry repairing a bridge over the Guayaquia river.
