
The founder and chancellor of the Santiago Technological University (UTESA) died on Thursday, 6 August 2020 at the Santiago Metropolitan Hospital of complications due to the Covid-19 virus. Priamo Rodríguez Castillo had been in the hospital since the second week of July. Utesa was founded in 1974 and is one of the largest Dominican universities. It was the first university in the Dominican Republic to offer night time studies.
Rodríguez Castillo was also president and owner of La Información newspaper and the Centro Médico Cibao-Utesa, among other businesses in Santiago. He is survived by his wife Ingrid González and children Frank, Lilly, María, Jesús and Melany Rodríguez González.
Through her Twitter account, Vice President-elect Raquel Peña sent her condolences to the family: “We have lost a great human being. Príamo Rodríguez lived to educate the new generations. The entire country is grateful to him. Eternal rest and peace to his soul. I send a hug to his family and loved ones.”
