
David Collado, the tourism minister-designate for the Abinader administration that starts on 16 August, traveled to Spain to meet with top executives of the leading Spanish hotel chains. As reported, the meeting focused on developing a public-private joint work plan to help the Dominican tourism industry recover in the short-, medium- and long-term following the highest international health and security standards.
“For the Dominican Republic your investment is very important. I am here to tell you that the Ministry and the Tourism Cabinet will be taking all measures so that our country is a safe tourism destination and to strengthen the tourism sector,” reportedly Collado told Escarrer.
The press release indicates that Grupo Meliá operates 18 hotels in the Dominican Republic.
Escarrer also spoke about certifying tourism destinations in these Covid-19 days. “In the case of Spain, the Bureau Veritas certification has been used,” explained Escarrer.
Collado spoke of obtaining the international certifications for the Dominican Republic, incentives for continued hotel operation, and the strengthening of the hospital network in tourist areas.
After the visit, Escarrer tweeted: “Grateful and impressed by @DavidColladoM, the new Dominican Republic Minister of Tourism. In times such as these, we need this kind of politician — expert and enterprising, favors public-private collaboration and has the vocation to serve.”
During his visit to Spain, Collado says he is also visiting executives of Iberostar and Grupo Piñero.
Collado had recently traveled to Philadelphia to meet with Apple Leisure Group, the leading tour operator for Mexico and the Caribbean.
