Maybeth Rodriguez desists of lawsuit against Marino Zapete

The media is reporting that Maybeth Rodriguez is desisting from the libel case she had submitted against muckraking journalist Marino Zapete. Maybeth Rodriguez is the sister of Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez.

Zapete had presented evidence of corruption in the Ministry of Public Works, and documents signed by Maybeth Rodríguez for billions in contract work.

The Government Procurement Agency this month confirmed it had responded to an inquiry from the Ethics director of the Medina administration, confirming there were major irregularities in the contracting signed by the sister of the Attorney General.

Zapete was removed from his TV program and suffered considerable loss of income as a result of the libel case. The Maybeth Rodriguez defense lawyers never were able to prove that the statements provided by Zapete were not based on fact. The Government Procurement Agency letter, only now being known, made unlikely that the defense of Maybeth Rodriguez would be able to win the case in court.

Zapete told the press he could not comment yet because he had not been notified by the Attorney General Office.

Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez is also accused of major irregularities in his term in office. He was named to the position by President Danilo Medina at the start of his second term in 2016. He is known to have carried out major changes that break from the best practices rules for the department.
