
Travel searches to Caribbean destinations are picking up on Expedia, the travel booking platform serving the USA and Canada.
The company reports that searches for booking in the Dominican Republic were up in July, the first month the Dominican Republic opened to travel after the airport lockdown since March 2020 due to the Covid-19 virus.
Expedia reports that Caribbean search trends have showed resilience. In July, data analysis performed by Expedia Group unveiled that international searches for August represent 65% of the next three-month searches. Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico were in the top of travelers’ mind, with 30% and almost 35% in August and October searches respectively. The total of international searches was from United States (80%) and Canada (10%).
According to Expedia Group data, the Dominican beach destination Punta Cana was in the top searched Caribbean destinations with 35% in July. The Dominican Republic reopened for tourism in July.
Puerto Rico began receiving tourists from abroad as of 15 July. However, since before, the Expedia Group sites registered search activity to San Juan, with 15% in July.
Jamaica was one of the first nations to lift the border’s closure in mid-June and since then, it has received around 40,000 tourists. Montego Bay, Jamaica travel searches on Expedia Group sites have increased 15%, also in July.
The Dominican Republic tourism statistics indicate foreign travel was 54,000 for the month of July 2020, the first after the reopening. This compares to 488,000 travelers in July 2019.
Expedia is recommending its partners to build confidence that travel is safe, offer the right inventory and rates and help travelers choose their property.
