RD$160,000 pension for Nini Caffaro; expert recommends eliminating privileged pensions

Erasmo (Niní) Caffaro was director of the National Theater at the time of his removal. The theater has been closed since the declaration of the National State of Emergency in March 2020. There is no opening date for the National Theater. The Presidency says that newly named deputy director, actor Carlos Espinal will take charge. Caffaro had been in the position since 2010. Previously, he worked in marketing at the Presidente Beer company for around 25 years. Cáffaro is 80 but looks like he was 60 years old.

By the standards set by the past Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) governments, Cáffaro’s pension is medium-sized. Social security expert, Arismendi Díaz Santana urged the government to eliminate the privileged retirement plans paid by the government. He said with the savings the government would have funds for those who really need the pensions. He mentioned there should be money for pensions for the former sugar cane workers, for instance.

“It is not only about the pensions of the administrators of the Banco de Reservas, and the governor of the Central Bank. It is a very widespread practice, which includes all the high-ranking officials of the autonomous and decentralized institutions, as well as the favorites of the political party in power. Let’s remember the pensions that were self-granted to the former members of the JCE, at the superintendencies, members of the judiciary, or the Chamber of Accounts, and the senators and deputies,” he remarked.
