Youth Minister Kimberly Taveras announced the government is awarding scholarships to the Dominican winners of the Nasa Systems Safety Award contest.
Dominican students from the Santo Domingo Technological Institute (INTEC) won in the System Safety Challenge Award category of The Rover Challenge. The Rover Challenge tasked US and international student teams with the design, engineering, and testing of a human-powered rover on a course that simulated the rocky terrain in the solar system. The teams had to perform mission tasks while negotiating the course, including sample retrievals and spectrographic analysis. The NASA competition is held to inspire new generations of explorers, engineers, scientists, and spaceflight professionals to sharpen their skills to help the agency establish a permanent presence on the Moon and send the first humans to Mars.
The agency announced the 2020 NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge winners during a virtual awards ceremony on 21 August 2020.
The Dominican students competed against 111 teams from 27 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and 10 other countries.
The teams designed and built innovative rovers to take on the challenging course. Awards were presented in eight categories.
The students can use the scholarships to complete their undergraduate careers and for graduate work.
Dominican winners of the NASA competition are:
Katherine Amarante (project leader), Matthews Rosario, Julio Núñez, Leslie Rosario, Omar García, Juan Chiriboga, Valentín López, Manuel Reyes and José Lara, from the INTEC Engineering School. The students designed, created and simulated “Apollo 27” space exploration vehicle.
“We are betting on you. We want you to help us promote science, technology and innovation, and to show all those who have not had the same opportunities that we can and that there is a Dominican state that will protect them,” said the Minister of Youth upon announcing the scholarships.
