The City Council of the National District approved the change of direction of 42 streets located in the so-called Polígono Central, the popular commercial and residential city area. Some of the streets are becoming one-way streets. In other cases, the city council ruled a new direction for traffic. Among the streets that will undergo changes is the Charles Sumner street that now will be exclusively a west-east street. Likewise, Gustavo Mejía Ricart will be west-east. Winston Arnaud will be north south from Gustavo Mejía Ricart to 27 de Febrero. Overall, the plan is to decongestion traffic in the city.
Implementing the new street directions will yet take months. The city government has to place signage and give residents at least a month to become accustomed to the changes before enforcing them. Some new traffic lights will be installed. Expect the changes to be in effect in November or December.
Commenting on the change, architect Marcos Barinas said on La Cuestion radio talk show with Diana Lora and Patricia Solano that again the city was giving priority to vehicle traffic over foot traffic. He said the first 42-street changes will be a bonus for some and a headache for others. Parking will only be allowed on one side of the streets.
He said the 42 street changes are to prepare for the bigger change that is on the books. This is said to be the converting the four-lane Winston Churchill Avenue to a South-North avenue, and the four-lane Abraham Lincoln to a North-South avenue. He said Mexico City tried this and then had to create exclusive public transport lanes running the opposite direction of the traffic.
The measures were discussed with National District experts, the city councilors and authorities at the National Institute of Transport and Transit (Intrant).
