President Luis Abinader visited former President Leonel Fernández of the People’s Force (FP) party on Thursday, 3 September 2020, as part of the round of talks with political leaders on the present health, economic and social challenges in these Covid-19 times.
In a press release issued after the meeting, former President Leonel Fernandez said the initiative will allow the country to respond coherently and sustainably to the diversity of problems.
“So this is the way democracy works. Democracy is not exclusion. To achieve legitimacy in its political actions, in the public policies it implements, a government needs the incorporation and participation of the diverse sectors of national life,” said Fernandez at the end of the meeting.
Fernández said he agrees with President Abinader that the Central Electoral Board (JCE) be made up of non-partisan individuals who can guarantee the elections are a legitimate expression of the people’s popular will. The Senate will be choosing the five members of the JCE within the next 60 days.
