President Luis Abinader said on Thursday, 3 September 2020, that the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) position is that the Senate elect politically-independent persons to the Central Electoral Board board. In the past, leading political parties have distributed the five member seats and their alternates depending on political clout.
He made the statement when answering a question by a journalist after he met with the leading officers of the Country Alliance (AlPais) political party, as part of visits with top politicians. The meeting is part of efforts to foster political consensus for critical national social, economic and health solutions during these Covid-19 times.
President Abinader said the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) position was to back electing independent persons to the Central Electoral Board. He said this is the same position the party has held regarding the recently appointed Attorney General and future naming of judges in the higher courts.
The PRM is majority in the Senate with 18 senators of 32, but is likely to need consensus to choose the five JCE members. The Constitution establishes that a two-third majority of those present decides in the case of the JCE. The Senate has 60 days to make the new appointments.
