
Environment Minister Orlando Jorge Mera called on the National Environmental Protection Service (Sempa) to halt the illegal felling of trees in the watershed of the Las Damas River in Duverge, in southwestern Independencia province. The deforestation is in open violation of Environment Law 64-00. Jorge Mera instructed Colonel Omar Gitte, the Sempa commanding officer, to take all steps necessary to end this practice. He also asked that the officer determine the extent of the damages to seek damages in the judicial system.
According to a press release from the Ministry, Jorge Mera requested the intervention by the Senpa after receiving documented evidence of the indiscriminate felling of valuable trees in the watershed. An arrest warrant has been issued for the man identified as responsible.
