Woman warden sent to La Victoria jail

The Attorney General Office named Denia Margarita Benders Fermín to be the La Victoria Jail warden. She replaces Gilberto Nolasco. Attorney General Miriam German also ordered a change in all the military and police assigned to the jail. It is the first time La Victoria has a woman warden. The jail has a population of around 7,000 inmates.

The changes come after Nuria Piera investigative report aired a report by young journalist Eiron Lopez who served preventive custody time at the jail and brought to the open the widespread corruption, drug trafficking and mafias freely operating inside the country’s largest jail. He used eyeglasses that had a camera integrated. Later in the week it was known that the murder of Ruddy Quezada, who had won a US$14 million case in the US justice for wrongful incarceration, was planned from the jail.

Previously, Benders Fermín was the warden for the Centro para Adultos Mayores Boca Chica, a jail of the new penitentiary model where senior citizens are sent.

The director of the jails division at the Attorney General, Roberto Hernández said changes are made to improve the inmates’ quality of life.
