
The Ministry of Public Health’s Epidemiology Department Coronavirus Bulletin #188 reports 468 cases of persons testing positive to PCR tests over the past 24 hours. The health ministry announced the processing of 3,337 first PCR tests in time for the Tuesday, 22 September deadline. The 14-day average for first PCR tests is at 3,816 PCR tests.
The 24-hour positivity rate for Bulletin #188 is at 14.02%. The four-week positivity rate continues to decline and is now at 17.13%, a striking difference from the 25% positivity rate on Monday.
Local epidemiologists alert that the spread of the virus comes and goes. This situation is why the Ministry of Public Health continues to recommend keeping the curfew and preventive measures. The curfew is due to expire on 27 September 2020. The public health authorities have announced the government plans to reduce curfew by two hours at the expiration date.
As per Bulletin #188, with the deadline of 22 September 2020, the Ministry of Public Health has registered 109,737 confirmed cases since the first case on 1 March 2020.
There are 24,229 active cases in the Dominican Republic, some 235 less than the previous day.
The number of deaths is 2,074, including 10 deaths recorded in the past 24 hours. Of these, one death occurred over the past 24 hours. In a population of more than 10 million, the fatality rate is 1.89% over the past four weeks. The fatality rate per 1M inhabitants is 198.59. The Ministry of Public Health reports that the average 1M inhabitants’ fatality rate for the Americas is 511.
Worldometer lists the 1M deaths per inhabitant rate for the United States at 622, Canada at 244, Spain at 664, and the Dominican Republic at 191.
The Ministry of Public Health report indicates that 24% of Covid-19 hospital beds are occupied (831 of 3,493 total available). 39% of the intensive care units for Covid-19 are occupied (208 of 532 beds). Health Minister Plutarco Arias says that the emphasis is on detecting the cases early on, so fewer persons require hospitalization.

The official cumulative incidence of the disease per 100,000 inhabitants as per confirmed PCR tests is highest in the National District and these top 10 provinces: National District (2,883), Pedernales (1,414), Santiago (1,184), Sánchez Ramírez (1,097), La Altagracia (1,096), La Vega (1,008), Barahona (911), Duarte (894), La Romana (832), Maria Trinidad Sánchez (823), Azua (818) and Santo Domingo province with 779 is in 12th place in the incidence of the disease per 100,000 inhabitants.

Despite government announcements on improvements, testing continues inconsistent. The newest allocated cases reported for the 22 September update deadline are: National District (147), Santo Domingo (133), La Vega (36), (Espaillat (19), Duarte (19), Valverde (18), San Cristóbal (14) and Santiago (13). Public Health Minister Arias has said the goal is to increase daily testing in the National District to 500 PCR tests per day.
Haiti reports 8,646 confirmed cases and 225 deaths, for the 22 September 2020 deadline.
In the Americas, the Dominican Republic is now ranked 11th in confirmed cases after the United States, Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Canada, Bolivia and Ecuador.
