The Ministry of Public Health’s Epidemiology Department Coronavirus Bulletin #200 reports 574 new confirmed cases. The 24-hour positivity rate is at 18.46% up from 12.71%, for the previous day. The 4-week positivity rate is at 12.50%.
The Ministry of Public Health reports active cases have now declined to 21,968, slightly lower than the 21,980 reported for the previous day.
Local epidemiologists continue to alert the population that the spread of the virus comes and goes. The Ministry of Public Health is concerned that increased mobility, especially with the reduction of curfew hours and domestic tourism promotions, will affect the spread of the disease that is now said to be “under control.” This situation is why the Ministry of Public Health continues to recommend keeping a curfew and preventive measures. The new curfew is in effect is from 29 September to 17 October 2020, from 9pm to 5am Monday to Friday, and 7pm to 5am on Saturdays and Sundays.
As per Bulletin #200, with the deadline of 4 October 2020, the Ministry of Public Health has registered 115,054 confirmed cases since the first case on 1 March 2020.
The health ministry announced the processing of 3,109 first PCR tests, down from 4,359 for the previous deadline. The 14-day average for first PCR tests is now at 3,428 PCR tests. The Ministry of Public Health says the demand for PCR tests has declined at both government and private labs. PCR tests are now readily available at 15 public hospitals nationwide.
The number of deaths is 2,144, including ten deaths recorded and one occurring in the past 24 hours. Local physicians in the public and private systems now have better treatment protocols to deal with the sickness, resulting in fewer patients requiring hospitalization. In a population of more than 10 million, the fatality rate is 1.86% over the past four weeks. The fatality rate per 1M inhabitants is 205.20. The Ministry of Public Health reports that the average 1M inhabitants’ fatality rate for the Americas is 550.
Worldometer lists the 1M deaths per inhabitant rate for the Dominican Republic at 196. This compares to Brazil at 688, Spain at 686, the United States at 648, Colombia 524, France 493, Argentina 464 and Canada at 251, all source markets for tourism for the Dominican Republic.
The Ministry of Public Health report indicates that 23% of Covid-19 hospital beds are occupied (778 of 3,415 total available). 31% of the intensive care units for Covid-19 are occupied (170 of 556 beds). Health Minister Plutarco Arias says that the emphasis is on detecting the cases early on, so fewer persons now are requiring hospitalization.

Haiti reports 8,819 confirmed cases and 229 deaths, for the 4 October 2020 deadline.
In the Americas, the Dominican Republic is now ranked 11th in confirmed cases after the United States, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Canada, Ecuador and Bolivia.
