New UK Ambassador is doing the rounds

New UK Ambassador Mockbul Ali has spent his first weeks holding in-person meetings with key Abinader administration officials to discuss new areas of investment, trade and cooperation between the two countries.

He has a career of more than 20 years as a diplomat, but this is his first time in the Caribbean and his first visit to the Dominican Republic. He is fluent in Spanish. He is giving priority to climate change, covid-19 and fostering bilateral trade. The DR is on the waiting list for the Covid-19 vaccine being developed by the team of specialists at the University of Oxford (COVAX).

The media reports the recently arrived ambassador has met with Minister of Foreign Relations on 30 September 2020. Since then, he has met with the Minister of Defense Carlos Diaz Morfa, Minister of Industry & Commerce Victor Bisonó, the Central Bank governor Hector Valdez Albizu, among others. In his first week on the job, he met with European Union ambassador Gianluca Grippa.
