President Luis Abinader announced that the private sector had put up the sum of US$8 million as a down payment on the purchase of 10,000,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine. Vice President Raquel Peña signed the purchase agreement with Astra-Zeneca (University of Oxford) to purchase the vaccines during a ceremony in the Cariatides Hall in the Presidential Palace.
The Ministry of Public Health is in charge of organizing the vaccine’s distribution once these are approved for use by the general public. It is said the 10 million doses will provide immunity for about half of the Dominican population. Two shots are required per person. The vaccine is expected to be available locally during the first half of 2021.
