The National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) with the backing of the Armed Forces, intelligence agencies, and the Public Ministry’s coordination seized 1,747 packages presumably of cocaine at the East Haina Port in Santo Domingo West.
Anti-narcotics agents, military personnel and canine units, were carrying out a routine inspection operation when they found a package hidden in one of the warehouses, which alerted the authorities.
Subsequently, dozens of containers that had arrived on a ship from Colombia were inspected. The agents found 1,747 packages of the suspect cocaine cargo distributed in dozens of waterproof packages and cardboard boxes wrapped in plastic with green, brown and black adhesive tape.
The cargo was camouflaged in kitchen items that were in transit to Rotterdam, Netherlands (Holland), according to the shipping manifest.
The Attorney General’s Office and the DNCD are investigating the case.
“We understand that we are in the presence of the largest drug shipment ever seized at the Port of Haina Oriental,” said a DNCD press release. The packages were sent to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) to determine the substance’s exact type and weight.
