Vinci Airports inaugurated a US$1 billion cargo terminal at the Las Americas International Airport. The new 6,800m2 warehouse centralizes cargo clearing and includes office space and counters for customs agents and cargo consolidators.
The new terminal is part of the multinational airport operator’s efforts to facilitate exports and imports at the capital city’s main international airport. FedEx will be operating out of the terminal. What is new is the direct access to the runway to reduce transit time between the terminal and aircraft. The new terminal accommodates a team of hazardous materials specialists, especially important in these Covid-19 times.
“We are proud to deliver this new Cargo City together with FedEx, one of the most important users of this new area. This reflects the continued commitment of Aerodom and our parent company Vinci Airports to provide airport terminals with world-class infrastructure and services in terms of quality and safety that meet the needs of our users and encourage the development of the aviation industry in our country,” said Monika Infante, Aerodom’s general manager.
“The opening of this new cargo terminal is another achievement that demonstrates our commitment to strengthening our infrastructure as we continue to invest in the country,” said Basil Khalil, vice president of operations for Fed Ex Caribbean and Central America. FedEx has 33 years old operating in the Dominican Republic.
During the event, Infante announced Aerodom is beginning the second phase of the airport’s modernization that includes the expansion of the central atrium of the passenger terminal. Security and outbound migration services are being relocated and modernized to improve the passenger experience. The expansion should be completed by January 2021. Codelpa is the contractor.
