Román Jaquez Liranzo to preside JCE

The Senate announced the naming of the five members and five alternates for the Central Electoral Board (JCE). Román Jaquez Liranzo, today president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) is named president of the JCE. Others are Patricia Lorenzo, Rafael Armando Vallejo Santelises, Dolores Altagracia Fernández and Samir Rafael Chami Isa. The alternates are Dolores Bello Dotel, Pedro Antonio López, Freddy Angel Castro Díaz, Anibelka Rosario and Hirayda Marcelle Fernández Guzmán.

The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) had openly opposed the candidacy of Jaquez Liranzo to the position.

Rafael Vallejo Santelises is a lawyer who was elected member of the Central Electoral Board in 1996. Patricia Lorenzo is a telecommunications engineer and women’s activist. Dolores Fernández has worked for 27 years at the JCE and is the director of Civil Registry at the JCE. Samir Chami Isa is a lawyer and a former coordinator for the Citizen Participation citizen watchdog group.

The candidates received the vote of 28 of the 32 senators. The Senate will swear the new members of the JCE in during the Senate session on Wednesday, 11 November 2020.
