US Ambassador Robin Bernstein visited Tourism Minister David Collado yesterday at the Ministry of Tourism. The Ministry of Tourism explained the meeting primarily focused on the protocols in place for travelers during these Covid-19 times. Accompanying the ambassador during the visit, US Consul General Sweney said the US is interested in the data on foreign travelers under the new safety protocols. Dominican airports reopened on 1 July 2020 after the shutdown in mid March.
The US Ambassador said the US government will continue to collaborate to restore tourism to the Dominican Republic. US tourists make up around 60% of foreign visitors.
So far, most Dominican resorts and hotels have reopened, but the occupancy is mainly domestic travelers. There are expectations more foreign tourists will come for the winter season.
