The Ministry of Public Health’s Epidemiology Department Coronavirus Bulletin #235 reports 421 new PCR confirmed cases. There is a breach of the downward trend in the positivity rate. The government says it is picking up the systematic intervention pace to isolate those infected before spreading the disease in their community.
Labs carried out 2,947 first PCR tests and sent in results in time for the deadline of Bulletin #235. The 14-day average is down to 3,934 tests. The Ministry of Public Health Covid-19 team says there is less demand for tests. The government has made available more fixed stations for testing and expanded services at public hospitals to catch the disease early and isolate sick people. Yet, the Ministry complains people are not showing up to test themselves early. The 4-week positivity rate continues below 10%.
The 24-hour positivity rate rose to 14.29%, when the 4-week positivity rate is at 9.97%. The number of active cases is now at 19,953, showing a new trend for increasing of cases.
The country continues under the declaration of a National State of Emergency at least through 1 December 2020. The Ministry of Public Health is concerned that home and friends’ gatherings and increased mobility can lead to the same virus flare-ups that have affected other countries worldwide, mainly due to pandemic fatigue. There continue to be sporadic spikes in Greater Santo Domingo and the provinces. This situation is why the Ministry of Public Health continues to recommend keeping curfew and preventive measures. The curfew is in effect through 11 November 2020, from 9pm to 5am Monday to Friday, and 7pm to 5am on Saturdays and Sundays. The curfew is expected to be extended. President Luis Abinader himself said recently that the concern is that relaxing measures could lead to the surges in cases seen abroad.
As per Bulletin #235, with the deadline of 8 November 2020, the Ministry of Public Health has registered 130,603 confirmed cases since the first case on 1 March 2020. Partial curfew has been in place since 18 March 2020.
The number of deaths is 2,267, including two deaths recorded and one in the past 24 hours.
In a population of more than 10 million, the fatality rate is 1.74% over the past four weeks. The fatality rate per 1M inhabitants is 216.97. The Ministry of Public Health reports that the average 1M inhabitants’ fatality rate for the Americas is 635.
Worldometer lists the 1M deaths per inhabitant rate for the Dominican Republic at 208. According to the 1M deaths statistics, less people have died of Covid-19 in the Dominican Republic than in Spain at 830, Brazil at 762, Argentina 740, the United States at 735, the United Kingdom at 721, Italy 691, Colombia 642, France 619 and Canada 279, all major markets for Dominican tourism.
The Ministry of Public Health report #235 keeps the trend for more demand for ICU units. 20% of Covid-19 hospital beds are occupied (653 of 3,250 total available). 35% of the intensive care units for Covid-19 are taken (182 of 523 beds).
