Government is not thinking about lifting the National State of Emergency for the holidays

After Europe has reported major spikes in Covid-19, the Dominican government is having cold feet about further reducing mobility restrictions. President Luis Abinader told reporters this week that the one thing he does not want is a renewed spurt in Covid 19 cases. As a result, he put the country on notice that, so far, the administration is not considering the National State of Emergency for Black Friday or for the Christmas-New Years holiday season.

Abinader said that the final decision would be announced by the Health Cabinet that is chaired by Vice President Raquel Peña.

Abinader seemed to be pleased that the gradual re-opening of the nation’s cultural, business and entertainment activities has not produced a sudden upturn in the number of Covid-19 cases. He noted some countries that opened up completely are now being forced to reintroduce very strict lockdowns on millions of their citizens. Such is the case in France and Spain.

The president of the Dominican Medical Association (CMD) Dr. Waldo Ariel Suero is strongly against relaxing curfew and other restrictions in the Dominican Republic.
