The Compañía Dominicana de Teléfonos, formerly Verizon and Codetel and today Claro Dominicana, celebrated its 90th anniversary on 11 November 2020. Carlos Slim Domit, son of Carlos Slim Helú and president of the board of directors of América Móvil and Grupo Carso and Daniel Hajj, CEO of América Móvil, hosted President Luis Abinader and Vice President Raquel Peña at the celebration. There was a small number of special guests in person, with most invited to the live stream of the event.
In the press release for the event, Rogelio Viesca, president of Claro Dominicana, highlighted the company’s sustained growth and its role in the Dominican Republic’s development and local telecommunications sector.
“We have had the privilege of being a fundamental part of the growth of the telecommunications industry in the country, as well as being the promoters of an unprecedented transformation, which has generated an evolution and commercial dynamization of the sector,” he said.
He emphasized that Claro has managed to evolve from a telephone company to become a telecommunications company, and from there to what it is today: a connectivity company that provides solutions driven by the digital transformation process.
“We celebrate the results achieved thanks to an intensive capital investment of more than RD$150 billion in a little more than a decade, which responds to the current demands in the country and the requirements of telecommunications services foreseen for the future”, expressed Viesca.
Similarly, Claro’s president highlighted that the corporation has more than doubled the access to mobile services for Dominicans since its arrival in 2006. At the time, the company had two million customers. Today, it has more than five million customers, of which more than 70% have smartphones.
He referred to the accelerated evolution achieved in the mobile network since the change from 2G technology in 2006, to being one of the first countries in the region to launch the current Gigared Claro. Current coverage is 96% of the country’s population with LTE. He said the company is technically ready for the deployment of a 5G Network.
Likewise, he highlighted the exponential growth of more than 600% of the access to fixed Internet services, which had 84,000 homes and businesses in 2006 and currently connects more than 600,000, of which 45% do so through fiber optics.
