Critical care telemedicine pilot program launched

The Ministry of Public Health, the National Health Service (SNS) and the Emergency and Health Management Committee for the combat of Covid-19, launched the Telemedicine in Critical Care Project. It is about connecting health care providers in provincial public hospitals with highly specialized critical care hospital in the capital city.

The American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (AmChamDR) and the business alliance “Heal a Nation” are helping to fund the project that seeks to improve the quality of diagnosis and treatment of Covid-19 nationwide. The Cardio-Neuro-Ophthalmologic and Transplant Center (Cecanot) is the first Santo Domingo public hospital to provide assistance via telemedicine to the new program.

The network of public hospitals will first link the Juan Pablo Pina Hospital in San Cristobal and the General and Specialty Hospital Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia (HGENSA) in Higüey. A digital platform with voice, data and video has been set up where physicians can consult the specialists.

The project will enable the transfer of coronavirus patients to higher level care centers. A network of experts will be available to improve the efficiency and quality of health services in critical care, and encourage collaborative work between teams of professionals. Patients are guaranteed continuity of care and the advantage of a second medical opinion.

The initiative facilitates the sharing of best practices and the effectiveness of procedures and medicines to treat Covid-19.

This is a first phase. The plan is to extend the initiative to other areas of the country.
