Modern shipyard repairs ships at Ozama River bank

Vice President Raquel Peña toured the expanded Joseph Industrial Development Corporation Shipyard and Dock on 12 November 2020. The facility is located at Prolongación Juan Goico Alix, off Ensanche Ozama of eastern Santo Domingo.

Company director José Ignacio Acero Ruiz explained the facility has new power pumps. The entrance channel was dredged to 20 feet, and new equipment were installed to up the shipyard capacity to repair four vessels the same time.

Joseph Industrial is a complete shipyard. Its installations include a 152.4m by 17.37m drydock and another 91m x 17.37m. It has docking space for 130m. Its services include: sandblast and paint, mechanical and machine shops, steel and pipe repairs, electrical repairs, tank cleaning and audio gauging.

Acero Ruiz described the shipyard as the most modern in the region. He says 200 people are employed directly, but they expect this to increase to 1,500 jobs in the future.

He assures that the industry is in capacity to repair ships and build them, with a high added value to the economy. He says the company is competitive with any dock in the region. “Our shipyard has a strategic location, in the center of the Caribbean. He explained the investment was made to service the more than 100,000 boats annually passing by the island.
