Domestic workers have been some of the biggest losers in the pandemic. For months, thousands of households sent their maids and household help home. In many cases, these were continued to be paid for one, two or three months. By June, nevertheless, it was get back to work, or goodbye. As reported, in more than 85,000 cases, the home worker relationship was canceled. In cases of many employees, only the live-in maid was kept.
The Ministry of Economy estimates that more than 85,461 domestic workers lost their jobs when a national lockdown in March told everyone to stay home. The Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development (MEPyD) released the estimate in a study analyzing the impact of Covid-19, as reported in Listin Diario.
The report also focuses on women employed in beauty salons. An estimated 13,000 of these employees lost their jobs when the salons were obliged to close for several months.
