
The Ministry of Superior Education, Science and Technology (MESCYT) presented the new members of the National Career of Researchers in Science, Technology and Innovation 2020 at an event held at the Modern Art Museum auditorium. Superior Education Minister Franklin García Fermín presented the year’s National Research of the Year Award to Graciela Godoy, a UNPHU graduate agricultural engineer with master’s degrees in plant pathology from Auburn University in Alabama and biological sciences doctorate from Nebraska-Lincoln University.
In addition, 392 new members were incorporated to the National Science, Technology and Innovation Researchers Career. Minister García Fermín said the accredited country science researchers are now 1,203.
A press release says that Alberto Núñez Sellés, Jesús Gilberto Concepción and María Penkova Vassileva won the Gustavo Rathe Medicacelli Award. They represent physical-chemical sciences, applications and frontiers, earth and space sciences, water and atmosphere, mathematics and computer sciences and educational mathematics.
The list of award winners includes Omar Paíno Perdomo and Ricardo Guarionex García García, winners of the Eugenio de Jesús Marcano Award in Biological and Environmental Sciences, and in Molecular Biology, respectively.
In the food services sector, Modesto Reyes Valentín received the André Vioebergh Award, and Ángel Rafael González Medina, from health sciences, received the Sergio Bencosme Ruiz Award.
Eduardo Sagredo Robles was awarded the Alvaro Nadal Pastor for excellence in engineering sciences, including computer science, related and emerging fields.
The Intec-Farco-Rockwel-Plastics Multiform consortium was recognized for the air-tec project, to develop mechanical respirators to combat Covid-19.
The jury for the awards were Sixto Joaquín Incháustegui Miranda, Roberto Arias Milla and Emilia Guzmán de Mercedes, businessman Jaime Moreno Portalatín, and the vice-minister of Science and Technology.
