Money isn’t everything in politics

Since 1997, millions in taxpayer money has been allotted to political parties in the Dominican Republic. Diario Libre says the funding has reached RD$14.5 billion over those 22 years. Traditionally there has been little accountability to how political parties use the funds.

Over those past 22 years, the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) is the political party to have received the most taxpayer money, reports Diario Libre. Despite receiving RD$4.7 billion, the PRD went from being the party that called the shots, to being a minority party.

Likewise, the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) was the second to receive the most cash. The PLD over the 22-year period has received RD$4.6 billion. In the 2020 election, the party slipped to third place.

The Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC) has also enjoyed majority party status. From 1997 to 2020, the party has received RD$3.8 billion. It has dwindled to minority status.

The party to receive the least of taxpayer money over the years did the best in the 2020 presidential, congressional and municipal election. The today-ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) received RD$1.3 billion over those years.
