
In an extraordinary session on Monday, 21 December 2020, the Senate passed the second reading on the child marriage bill. The bill prohibits legal marriages of persons under 18 years of age. Previously, marriages were allowed for girls as young as 15 years old with parental authorization and the approval of a judge
Alianza Pais deputy Jose Horacio Rodríguez presented the bill. The bill had already passed in the Chamber of Deputies in November.
The bill, nevertheless, returns to the Chamber of Deputies because amendments were made in the bill as received from the lower house. The deputies expect to meet next week to pass the bill and send it to the Presidency for enactment.
In the same extraordinary session held on Monday, 21 December 2020, the Senate approved the issuing and placement of public debt securities for RD$291,528,487,163.
