Carlos Pimentel, the Procurement Agency director, says Maxy Montilla, brother of former First Lady Candy Montilla, could legally sell to the state. Companies related to Maxy and Alexander Montilla Sierra, the brothers of the wife of former President Danilo Medina, are under investigation. They sold billions to the state-owned power utilities, EdeNorte, EdeSur, EdeEste and the Rural and Suburban Electrification Unit (UERS). Montilla began to sell to the state when his brother was named minister of the Presidency during the Leonel Fernandez administration (2004-2012).
Pimentel said that an investigation is open into the contracting of companies tied to the brothers. He said there could be irregularities in the contracts with the companies of the brothers of the former First Lady.
Maxy Montilla was interviewed by investigative journalist Alicia Ortega for her Monday, 21 December 2020 report, El Informe con Alicia Ortega. He defended his contracts with the state, arguing that he did business because he offered the best deals. He denied his success in contracting was due to his family ties.
