The Abinader administration, acting through the Dominican Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE), called for a public bidding for the contracting of the services of a firm of independent auditors to determine the total cost of the Punta Catalina thermoelectric plant. The plant is the most important infrastructure built from scratch during the past Medina administration (2012-2020).
A public statement signed by Energy & Mines Minister Antonio Almonte says bids are being received until 31 December 2020. The participants need to comply with all the requirements listed.
Almonte had announced at the start of the Abinader administration in August 2020 that the government will audit the thermoelectric plant to determine the total cost of the 752 megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in Punta Catalina-Hatillo, Azua.
According to the previous authorities, Punta Catalina was built at the cost of more than US$2.5 billion. The initial agreement for the original Punta Catalina contract established a maximum investment of US$1.95 billion. Engineering, procurement and construction services for the new plant were provided by Maire Tecnimont SpA, Construtora Norberto Odebrecht S.A and Ingenieria Estrella SRL
