Some stores are now opening at 6am for people who want to be able to avoid traffic jams. The simple problem is that there are too many vehicles for the city streets. To get places without traffic takes 10 minutes is now taking over an hour.
El Dia editorializes on 23 December 2020 on “the collapsed city.” The editorial points out that the city governments of Greater Santo Domingo have done nothing. “Meanwhile, as everyone can see, Greater Santo Domingo succumbs to chaos, with major economic losses in fuel, wasted time and deteriorating quality of life,” writes the editorialist. The conclusion: “Traffic in the city is simply chaotic, anarchic, unbearable and despairing.”
The editorialist understands actions can and should be taken to improve the road situation. “There is a lack of will and determination to stop the accelerated collapse of Greater Santo Domingo,” concludes the editorial.
The editorialist says traffic in the city was already chaotic before the holidays began. This year, leading banks advertised low rates for those purchasing cars. In the DR, it is easier to get a loan for a car than to develop a business.
A report in Diario Libre also focuses on how the city has become one single traffic jam.
Relief over the holidays could come as thousands leave the city for resorts and vacation homes in the interior for Christmas and New Year extended long weekends.
