Less tragedies this Christmas holiday

Retired general Juan Mendez of the Center for Emergency Operations (COE) said that over the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day holidays, there were just 11 traffic fatalities and eight other deaths attributed to other causes as of Saturday, 26 December. The lethality is an all-time low, as readers can easily remember recent holiday seasons with traffic deaths in the several dozen.

Mendez said that within the scope of the holiday safety operation there were 11 fatal traffic accidents and outside their areas, there were eight others for a total of 19 fatalities. There were also nearly 160 persons injured. As usual, over 80% of the incidents involved motorcycles.

The COE also reported over 300 persons were treated for food and alcohol intoxications. As part of the “Commitment to Life 2020” safety operation, the Traffic and Transportation Safety (Digesett) Agency agents handed out almost 4,500 citations for traffic law violations over a 52-hour period. Heavy trucks and other vehicles were fined for circulating, nearly 400 drivers for not having valid driver’s licenses, others for lack of helmets and lights.
