President says health authorities will have a single voice, submits bill to extend state of emergency

President Luis Abinader on Tuesday, 29 December 2020 set the record straight. Abinader says that the decision that only members of the Health Cabinet speak to the press on the Covid-19 seeks to organize the communications of the government health authorities.

The press is free to continue to report, what is being asked is that the government’s health authorities speak in unison. The Presidency announced that the Health Cabinet would address the nation on Covid-19 virus on Wednesday, 30 December at 10am when these gather at the Presidency. Vice President Raquel Peña presides the Health Cabinet.

The statement came after the director of the Communications Agency (Dicom) of the Presidency, Milagros Germán had tweeted on Monday: “To our friends in the media, our main allies, we ask that you continue to accompany us by offering only official information. In this way, we ensure that we do not confuse the population with unconfirmed information. We must all work so that the country receives the needed information.”

Answering questions of the press following an event to announce improvements in health care insurance plan for the police, the President called for Dominicans to adhere to the Covid-19 prevention measures during the New Year.

The Presidency submitted a bill requesting an extension of the National State of Emergency that would have ended on 15 January 2020. Statistics show an increase in cases of Covid-19 as mobility has increased significantly for the holidays.
