Renewal of circulation sticker

These are the final days to get the front window car stickers that authorize road circulation. The traffic cops love this month since they are really quick to nab anyone without the new sticker on the upper right corner of the windshield.

Renewals are available online at the DGII website. Just follow the steps, entering by “marbetes” and typing the cedula number of the person whose name is on the vehicle registration. The next five steps are easy. The DGII will deliver the sticker to your house for free. Online renewals expire on 15 January 2021.

If you don’t want to go that route, then take a photocopy of the vehicle registration to any Savings and Loans bank, many banks or any of the DGII offices around the country.

The fees are simple: If the registry is dated before 2015, the tax is RD$1500. From model year 2016 to the present, the fee is RD$3,000.

Do not wait for last minute. In about a week, there will be hundreds of thousands of people trying to do this and queues will be long.

The renewal period ends on 29 January 2021. After, anyone found driving a vehicle without the renewal will be fined and the vehicle impounded. And no ifs, ands or buts. You will pay towing fees, storage fees, a fine, plus the renewal fee plus an additional late fee. So do it now and save the hassle. Fines range from RD$2,000 to RD$3,100 for those not renewing on time. Take note that even if you plan to park the car at home all year long, you have to pay the year’s fee.
