Ministry of Foreign Relations condemns attack on the US Capitol

The Dominican Republic posted a statement on its social media platforms condemning the attack by Trump extremists on the US Capitol on Wednesday, 6 January 2021. The attack occurred when US legislators were in session to confirm the electoral college voting that gave the presidential election win to President-elect Joe Biden.

“The Dominican government condemns the acts of violence that occurred this afternoon in the US Capitol, contrary to its great democratic tradition. We make the strongest call for the cessation of violence and the peaceful transfer of power,” read the tweet from the Ministry of Foreign Relations.

Just the day before, President Luis Abinader had decorated US Ambassador Robin Bernstein at the end of her term in the Dominican Republic.

The escalating of the political crisis in the US shocked Dominican audiences. Several editorials expressed the general support of Dominicans to US democracy.
