Abinader government will not build another power plant

Minister of Energy and Mines Antonio Almonte says that the Abinader administration does not plan to invest in power plants’ construction. It is leaving this up to the private sector. The previous government built the Punta Catalina, a 732MW coal-fired thermoelectric central at a cost of more than US$3 billion.

Almonte said the Abinader government is instead granting facilities to local or foreign investors to build power plants. The government would then purchase the energy and distribute it through the government-owned EdeNorte, EdeSur and EdeEste power distributors.

Almonte said the government is calling for a bidding process for private businesses to build natural gas plants in Manzanillo and Puerto Plata on the north coast to add another 700 MW to the national grid.

“This tender will run parallel with another one for the expansion of the electricity transmission system,” he added.
