
Cruel behavior against animals is penalized in the Dominican Republic. The coordinator of the animal abuse division of the Attorney General Office, Marilyn Lois Liranzo and Karina Pimentel, acting director of the Animal Abuse Division of the Attorney General Office, sought to make an example of a young man captured on video abusing a small dog in the upscale Bella Vista neighborhood at El Angel apartment building on Av. Rómulo Betancourt. The video became the trending topic over the weekend in the Dominican Republic after it was uploaded and shared by neighbors who protested the abuse.
The Attorney General Office arrested Arturo Nanita for kicking the black French bulldog loose in an apartment terrace. The pet was rescued by the authorities who said the abuser will be submitted to justice for violating Law 248-12. The law establishes that pet owners cannot harm their pets. Nanita faces six months to one year in prison or 25 to 50 minimum wages.
The Attorney General Office has carried out many advertising campaigns to raise general public’s awareness of the responsibilities of being a pet owner. Law The vast majority of Dominicans are unaware of the existence of Law 248-12 on Animal Protection and Responsible Tenure.
