Work session two at the National Council of the Magistracy

The National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) held its second hearing of the aspirants’ presentations to four available Constitutional Court judge positions. Twenty-four aspirants were interviewed on 18 January 2021, including the president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) Mariano Américo Rodríguez Rijo.

In addition to Rodríguez Rijo, those assessed were: Erick José Hernández-Machado, Martha Erneris Jáquez Hiraldo, Julio César Madera Arias, Juan José Martínez Ventura, Pedro Antonio Mateo Ibert, Daira Cira Medina Tejeda, Claudio Aníbal Medrano Mejía, Víctor Rafael Menieur Méndez, Yobany Antonio Mercado Rodríguez, Yokaurys Morales Castillo, Wilson Francisco Moreta Tremols, Bernabel Moricete Fabián, Aldemaro José Muñiz Mena, Sergio Antonio Ortega, Guillermo Antonio Peña Capellán, Mercedes Peralta Cuevas, Sonia Milagros Perdomo Rodríguez, Eduardo Pérez Medina, Juan Proscopio Pérez Minyety, Fernán Leandry Ramos Peralta, Leonardo Recio Tineo, Namphi Andrés Rodríguez, Víctor Leonardo Rodríguez and Mariano Américo Rodríguez Rijo.

The judges were asked for their positions on sensitive issues such as the competence or not of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights concerning the DR, Ruling 168-13, same-sex marriage, international treatises, among other issues.

A third session will take place on 19 January with the interviews to the final applicants of 64 being assessed.

The CNM has said they expect to decide on the four judges by 22 January 2021.
