Public health vs the economy?

Hundreds of thousands of Dominicans used the Altagracia Day and Duarte Day long weekend to exchange lockdown in cities for vacation time in resorts, tourist towns and countryside. The president of the Dominican Medical Association (CMD), Dr. Waldo Ariel Suero warns that the country could see another spike in Covid-19 cases due to the gatherings of friends and family for the January holidays. Dr. Suero is also against the recent relaxing of mobility in the Dominican Republic.

The president of the Society of Infectology, Rita Rojas, also warned that the measures announced for the next two weeks that allow for restaurants and gyms to open and reduce curfew hours could lead to the collapse of the medical capacity to deal with the disease. Diario Libre reports that Covid-19 hospitalization capacity is at 68% in private clinics and 32% in public hospitals.

Medical authorities have just contained the spike that occurred after the Christmas holidays. But the positivity rate is still is hovering above 20%.
