New buses on the Núñez de Cáceres Ave. in Santo Domingo

President Luis Abinader announced the start of the Núñez de Cáceres bus corridor in the National District. The new bus route replaces “concho” vehicles, or the multi-fare paying taxis that provided the service on the 10.2 extension of the north-south avenue in the capital city. The route runs from John F. Kennedy Avenue in the north to Independencia Avenue in the south. President Abinader says the new bus route is the first to allow Santo Domingo Metro passengers’ free transfer. An estimated 10,000 bus users per day will benefit from the new service on 90-passenger buses.

President Abinader said that an estimated three million people commute in Greater Santo Domingo (North, West, East Santo Domingo and National District) with 42% using private transport, 36% public transport, 21% on foot and 1% on a bicycle every day. He said the government is working to improve transport in the city and the Núñez de Cáceres corridor is an important step forward. He said it is part of the new efforts to draft a new Urban Mobility Plan that encompasses an expanded public transport to provide definite solutions to urban transport for the National District and the seven municipalities that make up the Santo Domingo province.

The Presidency said the new route is possible due to a public-private alliance incorporating the governmental Omsa and private ventures. The government did not name the private ventures.

Present for the launching of the new route were:

Also present were Eduardo Estrella, president of the Senate; Presidency Minister Lisandro Macarrulla; Public Works Minister Deligne Ascensión; and the ambassador of the Republic of China, Zhang Run.

Also, National District Mayor Carolina Mejía; Samuel Pereyra, administrator of the Banco de Reservas (Banreservas) and Luis Rosado, president of the National Transportation Confederation (Conatra SA), a major private transporter whose majority owner is a senator for the ruling PRM political party.
