Vehicle driving permit deadline extended to mid-February

The Tax Agency (DGII) is extending the deadline for renewing vehicular driving permits to Friday, 19 February 2021. The deadline would have expired on Friday, 29 January. As reported, there is a backlog in distributing the stickers to those who have applied online.

The DGII says that owners of vehicles will now have until 19 February to renew the so-called “marbete” at financial entities and tax administration branches. The fees are the same as in 2019-2020. For vehicles manufactured up to and including 2015, the cost is RD$1,500 and those from 2016 onwards is RD$3,000.

This is the first time that the DGII extends the deadline. It explains that the extra days are given because of the need to comply with security measures during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Some 31 financial entities with their 653 branches and/or agencies nationwide are authorized to supply the stickers. The DGII calls for taxpayers to avoid crowds and get their permits within the new deadline.

The DGII says that those who have already renewed online by the 15 January deadline and have not yet received their sticker will receive it in time.

As of 26 January 2021, some 1,162,692 marbetes had been renewed. For the current season, there are 1,449,952 vehicles eligible to renew, therefore, 287,260 are still pending.

The DGII expects to collect RD$2.34 billion in revenues. Of the total, RD$1.92 billion had already been collected since the renewal period began on 17 November 2020.
