Shortened curfews ignite renewed activity in Colonial City

The government’s relaxing of the curfew nationwide, now from 7pm on weekdays and 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays, has reawakened life in the historic center of the oldest city in the New World, the Colonial City. This is because people get three hours after curfew closing time to circulate.

Media reports are that Santo Domingo’s Colonial City is once more becoming filled with locals and tourists who take advantage of the more relaxed protocol to have an enjoyable time in the narrow streets and broad plazas of the area. Bars and restaurants are open, the park benches are occupied and people are walking around once more.

Lots of groups can be seen taking pictures in the Plaza España or in one of the outside tables of the many bars. Members of the Specialized Corps for Tourist Safety patrol the area on their motorcycles, keeping an eye on things. Even the pigeons in Columbus Park, next to the oldest cathedral in the New World, were happy with so much food going their way.
