
President Luis Abinader announced today the construction of an extension of the state Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, a new marketplace and a justice building for Santo Domingo East municipality. The municipality is the largest in the Dominican Republic with a population of more than two million people. It is part of Greater Santo Domingo.
On Monday, 1 February 2021, the Council of Government met at the Municipal Palace of Santo Domingo East and made the announcement.
President Abinader also announced Santo Domingo Metro Line’s extension to reach the Caucedo Port, the construction of a transfer station for solid wastes, and ten new modern bus corridors. The government announced plans to build a botanical garden in the Cachón de la Rubia natural sanctuary on the eastern bank of Ozama River. Santo Domingo North municipality would participate in this new attraction.
The President said a commission would recommend the environmentally-sustainable use to be given to the bus terminal built by the Medina administration. Members of the the commission include the Mayor’s Office of Santo Domingo East, the Ministry of the Environment, the senator for Santo Domingo province and the Ministry of Culture.
He said the government is allocating RD$600 million for the branch of the UASD in Santo Domingo East. He said the Ministry of Higher Education would carry out the planning for the extension. The government would contribute RD$250 million for the construction of the new municipal market.
For the transformation of the Cachón de la Rubia into a botanical garden, the government will work with multilateral organizations and the authorities of the municipality of Santo Domingo North.
Abinader said the Santo Domingo Aqueduct and Sewerage Corporation (CAASD) would build a salinity barrier to ensure potable water to the entire population of Santo Domingo East and part of those living in Santo Domingo Norte.
