The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced the eight teams of 24 teams (12 men and 12 women teams) that have qualified to compete in the Olympic Games basketball tournaments. For the men’s tournament, these are: Iran, France, USA, Australia, Nigeria, Argentina, Japan and Spain.
The Dominican Republic men’s team is registered to play for one of four remaining slots for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The DR will play in the Belgrade, Serbia FIBA Qualifying Tournament scheduled for June 29 to July 4, 2021.
The FIBA also agreed to changes in the play schedule. In both the women’s and men’s tournaments, a new competition system has been put in place for the Tokyo Olympics. The group phase will consist of three groups of four teams each. The teams placed first and second in each group, and the two best third-placed teams in the group phase qualify for the final phase.
The changes were made to the competition system to bring additional interest to every game of the group phase and reduce player workload. To capture Olympic gold, a team has to play six games, instead of eight games, as was the case at past Olympic tournaments. The basketball matches are scheduled to start on 25 July 2021 in Tokyo, Japan.
