Thousands of municipal officials have not presented their sworn worth statements

Alianza País (AlPais) minority party denounced on 3 February 2021 that 3,890 outgoing and incoming municipal officials have not presented their sworn declaration of assets as required by Law 311-14. The worth statements need to be delivered to the Chamber of Accounts within 30 days after the officials take office or hand over command. The new municipal terms began on 24 April 2020.

The minority party explains that 137 mayors have not submitted their statements. This includes 15 in office and 122 outgoing mayors. Also pending to complete the requirement are 233 deputy mayors – 18 current and 215 outgoing.

In addition, 1,434 city councilors – 172 in office and 1,262 who have left the positions. Others that have not complied with the requirement are 302 municipal directors – 29 in office and 273 outgoing. Also 372 deputy directors – 10 in office and 362 outgoing. And 1,412 municipal councilors – 169 in office and 1,243 outgoing.

The party said the situation is an act of irresponsibility and lack of respect for the positions. The party calls for the new members of the Chamber of Accounts (expected to be named later this month) to strengthen the mechanisms so that this type of situation does not continue.

Alianza País said the situation is part of the lack of transparency and the culture of impunity that prevails in political parties’ vision and practice regarding municipal management.
