Ministry of Education is getting ready to return, somewhat, to the classrooms

The Dominican Association of Public School Teachers (ADP) president Xiomara Guante says the conditions do not exist for return to teaching. She is speaking for the public sector.

Last week, Education Minister Roberto Furcal and Health Minister Plutarco Arias said the government has talks ongoing to return to in-person classes. The Ministry of Education had announced the official return to classes in November 2020. But Ministry of Education has only authorized distance learning via TV or the Internet.

Private schools are insisting they be allowed to reopen gradually and voluntarily. They argue that if the public school is not ready, the Ministry of Education should not impede the hundreds of schools that have the conditions to reopen in the private sector to do so.

Likewise, Deputy Minister of Public Health Ivelisse Acosta has said the government is contemplating reopening in areas where the disease incidence is low. For the past two weeks, the positivity rate has been consistently dropping in the Dominican Republic and now hovers around 18%.
