The Senate committee on tourism met late last week with high-ranking officials of the Dominican Armada (Navy) to discuss issues relating to a bill that would reduce factors affecting the country’s growth of nautical tourism.
The Bill for Incentives for Nautical Recreational Tourism has the support of senator Jeanette Bournigal (PRM-Puerto Plata), who told reporters that the Dominican Republic is not taking advantage of nautical tourism at a time when there is an increase in demand for this type of travel. “This project is a high priority. We have to pass a law that really benefits this important tourism segment. We are an island and we are not taking advantage of the fact,” she said. She stressed that the country needs to create a single tariff and a single-window facility to encourage more boaters to come to the country.
President Luis Abinader was recently in Luperón Bay, considered one of the best in the Caribbean, where free zone manufacturing magnate Fernando Capellán presented a nautical tourism project.
The Dominican Republic already has excellent boating facilities located on the north coast, including the Ocean World in Puerto Plata, Puerto Bahía in Samaná, Casa de Campo in La Romana, Cap Cana in the East, among others.
