The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a statement that says that it is closely following the research connected with the anti-parasitical medicine, Ivermectin, as a possible treatment for those affected by Covid-19. The virus has literally floored major economic powers around the world and caused prices for everything to go way up, and killed more than 2.5 million worldwide.
The WHO announcement is not an endorsement of the effectiveness of the low cost pharmaceutical. However, WHO did say that some studies have shown “promising” results. The UN organization said that within a few weeks it expects to announce its position on the drug as a treatment for the disease that would be accessible to millions because of its low cost and widespread availability.
The medicine, formerly and currently used to treat parasites in animals and humans, has been used in many different countries and in the Dominican Republic it is now extensively used for treating Covid-19, even if it is not part of the official treatment for the disease.
The scientific committee set up by the World Health Organization is looking at dozens of studies. Eleven studies involving over 1,500 patients, and another 56 studies covering 7,000 patients are under peer review. “So many small studies with so many different results,” was one comment issued by the committee.
Dr. Jose Natalio Redondo, a noted physician in Puerto Plata and Punta Cana has been a torchbearer for the medicine in the country. Ivermectin is sold over the counter throughout the Dominican Republic.
